This is an email I wrote to a prominent Christian radio station in Brisbane. I did not get to finger exactly which station it was from a source not controlled by me, but I wanted to make my point anyway. These fanatics will go to no end to push their ideology onto decent Australian people.

It is thought to be your station but basically unclear exactly what Christian radio stations were broadcasting the importance of the 11 am remembrance today where the announcer claimed the men who fell in battle swore allegiance for God and country.

I would like to point out as an ex-serviceman that was totally incorrect, the facts are that the First World War for example was a sworn allegiance to His Majesty the King and country. God was simply a device to help the individual in this process if you so believed in this God.

I ….. do make oath that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to His Majesty, His heirs and successors, and that I will, as in duty bound, honestly and faithfully defend His Majesty, his heirs and successors in person, Crown, and dignity against all enemies, and will observe and obey all orders of His Majesty, his heirs and successors, and of the Generals and Officers set over me.

So help me God.

It is a blatant insult and a discredit to Christians, non-Christians, the dead, past and current servicemen to undermine these facts to simply advertise the Christian God by using the lie that God was the primary reason for defending their country.

If it was not your radio station I apologise unreservedly, however if you are aware of the station or stations that have broadcast this untruth please send it on or notify me.

Thank you and have a good day.

  1. I appreciate your distinction Steve, but what about the ‘so help me God’ part?’ If you agreed to that sentiment, that it seems all bets were off?

Oaths are serious business, that’s why I do not take them.

  2. That part was I expect added at the end to appease the religious times where the Western world was predominantly Christian. I think now you have the choice to use the Bible and use those “so help me God” words or you can swear on any other religious book.

CS I believe oaths are not important or serious for me, they are merely a collection of words to simply establish you are not with the enemy or against your own country and to most people it either means nothing or is forgotten within minutes.

I have taken the oath for military service but truthfully I do put my life on the line for anything apart from saving a life or protecting my own. Their majesties do not know me from a bar of soap and the government does not really need my death to save them.

    1. And even more importantly, Steve, just what is the non-existent “God” going to do to help?

And BTW, isn’t it SOP for ANY person going into the armed forces to take an OATH in which they swear allegiance to their country? Seems CS has never served in that capacity …

  3. SOP for all NATO military at least Nan. I expect the God issue fires up the courage and aggression for the theists, afterall God dealt out many millions of deaths according to the Bible, but of course we know it is simply a story book from the bronze age.
